How to access POP email accounts using Telnet ?

Interesting. Think about 1970's and 80's where 'they' access the emails using monochrome monitors. How hard it was to type the commands to read the emails ? There were text based email clients that time, but most of them were really cool just like you to use telnet. Later technology improved, protocols improved, our thoughts improved and thanks to Xerox and Apple for implementing GUI and we started playing the mouse game. Oops. Thanks to Microsoft for marketing the technologies.

Let's come back to our topic. I am going to access my email account arun@egluewebbed.net using telnet. My account password is VicBL (short form of Vaseline intensive care Body Lotion ) See the steps below and the input and output are colored differently.

First step to is to actually enter the command telnet. In windows it is done by Start --> Run --> cmd and entering the command. On a Linux box, it is simply taking a Terminal of your likeness and enter the telnet command as in step one.

+OK Hello there.

Second step is to enter your username followed by the POP3 command USER as below. You should get a reply starting with +OK followed by a statement asking for password. -ERR means there is an error in your input and needs to be corrected. This applies to all replies.

Nice. All is well here. Now it's time to enter the password. Enter your password followed by the POP3 PASS command as seen in the next step.

+OK logged in.

Now you entered the correct pass and so you are logged in. Now start looking at messages. STAT command - Short form of statistics. STAT simply responds with a single line consisting of two numbers: the number of messages in your mailbox and the total size of those messages in bytes.

STAT showed there are 334 messages in my mailbox sizing a total of 2038899 bytes. I am listing the mails below. As name indicates, LIST lists the contents of the mailbox. The terminating line is a period on a line by itself, which is pretty standard for mail protocols in general. Each line consists of the mail message number

And the list goes on till 334 messages ending in a period. RETR retrieves a message. Use the message number from LIST. A command like RETR 32 10 means display the first 10 lines of 32nd mail.

Other POP3 commands of interest will be,

DELE - DELE deletes a message. It won't actually be deleted until you QUIT the session, and you can undelete everything you've deleted (in case of a mistake) by using RSET

TOP - TOP is actually an optional command, but most servers support it now. It returns the headers of message msg plus n lines of the body. If n is zero, of course, you just get the headers, which is nice for doing filtering without having to get the entire message.

QUIT - QUIT terminates the session and deletes any messages marked with DELE.

NOOP - No operation. Just for fun eh
